Mike Bobo , new/old offensive coordinator of the Dawgs
Kirby Smart has made a mistake! Bobo was the easy hire but not the right one. The offense will suffer and Georgia’s 3 peat chances are doomed forever! Maybe? Let’s take a deeper look. Mike Bobo‘s Georgia teams underperformed compared to Georgia’s Monken run teams. How could this be? Let’s take a deeper look. In Bobo’s first run at Georgia (2007-2014) as both offensive coordinator and quarterback coach. Georgia’s offense averaged a ranking of 32nd out of 120 teams. That includes the highest ranking (8th overall offense) in 2014. Monken’s teams (2020-2022) ranked 38th in 2020, 9th in 2021, and 5th in 2022. That’s an average of 17.3 out of 120 teams in the offensive ranking. That’s almost twice what Georgia’s offense averaged under Bobo. Moniken can also claim two top-ten overall finishes for the offense. Let me be clear about this here and now. Defense wins championships, period. Pump the brakes, noob. I would love to tell you that offense wins championships but it doesn’t. Defense wins championships. If Georgia’s defense can’t stop the opponent’s offense then who cares who the offensive coordinator is and how many points you score, you’ll always lose. It’s simple math, period.
While Monken was at the helm of the offense, Georgia’s overall defense was ranked 12th in 2020, 2nd in 2021, and 4th in 2022. I’ll take those odds compared to anyone in any three-year span. When Bobo was at the helm in a dual role (Offensive coordinator/QB coach) Georgia’s overall defense was averaging a ranking of 36th with the best year peaking at 8th overall. How many championships did Bobo win? Two to nothing with Monken coming out on top. Wait one red and black minute! There’s this guy named Kirby Smart who’s the cornerstone for Monken’s success that Bobo hasn’t had at Georgia. The Georgia Bulldogs under Smart boast an average of 7th overall defense in his tenure at Georgia. This includes 2nd overall in 2021 and 4th overall defense in 2022. The best year Bobo had was an 8th overall defense which he had nothing to do with, yet it greatly affected the offense.
Still not convinced? Curious about Bobo’s time at Colorado State University? In his time at CSU, Bobo coached the Rams to three of their top seven scoring seasons in the program’s history. Throw in a bowl game in three consecutive seasons when he started and you’re looking at something no one else has done at CSU. In conclusion, no matter how you justify your reasoning for why Georgia will fail to be successful or as successful you cannot leave out parts of the equation. Period. Just keep in mind Bobo who is a highly experienced coach has yet to step on the field with Smart run defense that mauls teams better than what was at Georgia before. Bobo has the future of the Dawgs ahead of him with a defense that will actually give him and the Dogs another chance at a ring.
