The founding of the United States was a people’s cry for life, liberty, and freedom without English tyrannical influence. The very foundation of The Constitution is steeped in the legal ramifications of what is freedom and how to preserve it. The 1st Amendment is Freedom of speech! It doesn’t matter whether you’re a Constitutionalist or Republican, no one likes being censored. That being said, why hasn’t there been more of a national outcry for the policies of DeSantis that in essence is censoring and impeding on the Constitutional rights of Disney and its members. The First Amendment states as follows:
“….prevents the government from making laws that regulate an establishment of religion, or that prohibit the free exercise of religion or abridge the freedom of speech, the freedom of the press, the freedom of assembly, or the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”
DeSantis has rallied his base and those in Florida to seek repercussions against Disney for their outspoken opposition to what Desantis believes. These repercussions come in the form of a political coup in lack of better words which allows Desantos to hand-pick the people who will be in charge of the Reedy Creek Improvement District board of directors. These Republican-picked heads will do the bidding of Desantos which in the broader view of things will not allow for Disney to be given special authorizations. Those include the loss of a special tax status which keeps the state from taxing them. This special treatment was given to Disney back when they were establishing itself. The land around Disney was swamped. bogs and forest. Now that the surrounding areas are profitable and built up the politicians (Desantis) want into the tunes of money. Furthermore, the deconstruction and reconstruction of the Reedy Creek Improvement board allow DeSantis to punish the Disney company for any rhetoric that Republicans find not in line with party beliefs. A little bit Gestopish don’t you think?
The right to freedom of speech allows individuals to express themselves without government interference or regulation. Yet, Disney is vocal to say the least about governmental practices and ideology that goes against Disney’s inclusive nature for the LGBTQIA+ community. Make no mistake about it, there is no public love loss between the governing body of Flordia (Republican led by Desantis) and now Desanto inc. is going to make Disney pay for their opposition and outspokenness. Desanto hopes to cull the dissident that he considers “Wokeness” and has said as much. Let’s not forget his efforts to remove any African American studies or for that fact an education being taught that shines a negative light on slavery. Desantos and his ilk are seeking to whitewash history and remove any content that “White Privilege” card-carrying members would consider offensive or against what they believe. This is basically censorship and couldn’t be any more evident. Is Florida headed to a censored reality with their leader Desantos leading their crusade straight in the heart of Nineteen Eighty-Four?
